Getting Around: Your Options for a Sustainable Future

Most of us get around in cars, either as drivers or passengers. However, many students walk or bike to school while some take the bus or train. Electric bikes are getting new people into commuting by bike or riding a bike for pleasure. Every time you bus, walk, or take the train, you help reduce traffic congestion and pollution.
However, there are new options all the time and people are getting creative. Mobile coffee business on a bike, anyone? Cargo bikes, cycle couriers, and small electric vehicles are all part of emerging trends. Meet people who are most involved with roads and getting around on a day-to-day basis to find more about the latest innovations.
In preparation for this field trip, LEARNZ content will support inquiry into:
- Multiple modes of transport
- Emerging trends for how people get around
- Road Safety Week
- Attitudes to cars and road safety
- Future-focus - Sustainability, new careers
- The effects of new technology
During the field trip you will:
- Follow Andrew's tweets on twitter
- See what schools are doing in the 'Getting around' space
- Interview a transport planner
- Find out how research into behaviour leads to design of transport routes that are safe and a pleasure to use
- Visit places to see how community input has led to inclusive designs for everyone wanting to get from A to B
- See how roads are being designed so they are more accessible and safe for children
- Go on a car journey and make decisions about your route and your choices
- Go on for walk with students and make decisions about your route
- Talk with students about their attitudes to road safety and what they could do next week during Road Safety Week.

Get Outdoors Safely: With Maps!
During Get Outdoors Week, you are encouraged to get out and about safely in New Zealand’s beautiful, but sometimes dangerous outdoor environment. An important part of staying safe is understanding where you are going and letting others know about your location. Mapping plays a key role in enabling you to stay safe and have fun when you go off the beaten track.
On this field trip, find out how maps help you plan your adventure, keep you safe in the outdoors, and assist organisations in finding you if something goes wrong.
