Matariki – the Māori New Year

The pre-dawn rise of Matariki can be seen in the last days of May or early June every year. By celebrating Matariki at your school(external link), you can bring a range of The New Zealand Curriculum principles to life.

Students can explore values, develop key competencies, and examine social science concepts. This resource page provides ideas and resources that teachers and students can use to get involved.

Māori language week

This year Te Wiki o te Reo Māori(external link) is 27 July–2 August. The theme is Ngā Mātua / Whāngaihia te reo Māori ki ngā Mātua – To support parents to whāngai the language to their tamariki. We’ll develop helpful guidance on the use of Māori language in the home and will increase awareness of the benefits of bilingualism.

The Māori language week page provides curriculum-based resources to support teachers in the classroom.
